Artist statement
It’s a curious truth that the most beautiful things are often hidden. I've always been fascinated with things that are hidden because there was a kind of wonderful mystery to discovering things that no one else knew or cared about. My name is Andrew French and I am a graphic designer with a specialty in graphic arts, poster design, and mixed media. I have been operating as an artist since 2021 and I live in Tulsa, OK. My inspirations include video game art, vintage posters, and the art of Gustave Dore. Many of my pieces explore themes of loneliness, loss, and the unknown. I hope to bring something new into the world that expresses something that is hidden, concealed, or invisible when only looking at the surface level. There's something compelling about uncovering the most fundamental ideas and emotions of the world. It's not about knowing more than everyone else. It's about being able to communicate to people things that they had never thought about. In the context of scripture, God receives the glory for the mysteries that he has set in motion in the universe. It is a god-ordained pursuit and I believe that this is one of the purest examples of ‘Working heartily as for the LORD’. My art reflects this in a particular way but I think it applies to art as a concept. This perspective is not very common and as a result, I feel that this is something that I can both give to the world and bring to the table as an artist. It’s something that has driven my creative process in the past and will continue to drive it for a long time.
“It is the glory of the LORD to conceal things and the glory of kings to search things out” (Proverbs 25:2)
